CRV

Founded 1970 as Charles River Ventures · San Francisco and Palo Alto · Seed and Series A

One of the oldest firms in venture, reported to have backed over 750 startups with 80 going public. Led DoorDash's seed and the Series A rounds for Mercury and Vercel.

Criteria: Asked what share of deals are seed and Series A versus later, a general partner answered: almost all is seed and A. Focus areas are enterprise and infrastructure software, developer tools and consumer, with a bioengineering practice. Notably, CRV returned capital to its investors and deliberately downsized its fund, with a partner stating they could have closed on more but wanted to remain small and focused, and to preserve the ability to see an impact from smaller checks.

What this means for your pitchA firm that shrinks its fund on purpose is telling you something useful: smaller funds need smaller exits to succeed, so a good but not astronomical outcome can still matter to them. For a company with a real but bounded ceiling, that alignment beats a famous name.
