Upfront Ventures
States it likes to come in at the earliest stages, writing a first check at seed or even pre-seed, then supporting subsequent rounds from a growth fund. Headquartered in Los Angeles with investment professionals in the Bay Area as well, investing nationally and, for the right deal, globally.
Criteria: States a belief in rolling up sleeves and doing the hard work alongside founders, and specifically in being there when a company hits a bump in the road, even when that means delivering tough messages others will not. Hosts the annual Upfront Summit in Los Angeles, an invitation-only gathering of more than 1,000 investors, entrepreneurs and thought leaders. Publishes no check sizes and no fund sizes.
What this means for your pitchThe tough-messages line is the tell: this is a firm advertising candour rather than cheerleading, which is worth more than a slightly larger cheque when the road bends. Their Thoughts blog writes up recent seed leads and the reasoning behind them in public, which is the practical read before any approach.
Check sizes and fund sizes are not published by the firm.
